Air Freight Rates in Asia Fall to 17 Month Low

Asian air freight prices have fallen 14.1% from the same month last year, the lowest that they've been in almost eighteen months. This is reported in the Drewry air Freight Price Index provided by Drewry Publishing. Drewry provides an independent viewpoint, creating comprehensive databases of maritime industry intelligence.
The Drewry Freight Price Index measured air freight pricing from Shanghai, which also went down for the third time in the past four months. The Shanghai air freight pricing numbers declined 6.4% from the month before.
Freight traffic on Asian airlines fell in February of this year. The price drop occurred as the freight traffic declined. This drop in freight traffic decreased 4.2%, year over year, in February. This was the first time this happened since October 2009. This information was provided by the Association of Asia-Pacific Airlines.
OAG aviation, an aviation industry marketing group, says that airlines in the Intra-Pacific region "is the clear leader" in terms of "absolute growth" in April, using planned capacity levels worldwide as a measure. This was reported in OAG's Frequency and Capacity Trend Statistics (FACTS) report for April 2011. They also pointed out that over the past five years, this region has shown an average capacity growth of seven percent, compared to the global average of four percent. This makes it more understandable that the current air freight rates could fall to this 17 month low.
The CEO of UBM Aviation, who produces the OAG FACTS report stated in the April report that Japan "is such a major influence on the world stage and no region will be immune from the effects of the devastation" caused by the recent earthquake and resulting tsunami in Japan.
The Chinese New Year brought a break in production, which is always factored into the freight traffic predictions for the airlines. This year, the freight traffic for Asian airlines, taking into consideration the break in production for the Chinese New Year, had a decline of 14.5% from January.
Capacity was expanding during this time. According to the Association of Asia-Pacific Airlines, capacity expansion rose 1.7% while Asian airline freight traffic prices were dropping. Capacities and prices may affect ocean shipping companies' ocean freight capacities and prices as well.
The capacity increases have helped push the Drewry Air Freight Price Index to 98.1, according to the Journal of Commerce. They report that this is the lowest point since September of 2009 when the reading was 97.5.

I read some news about Alaska Airlines. It states that Alaska Airlines' new Portland-Maui nonstop flight expands traveler options to the islands and deepens the rivalry between the Seattle-based carrier and Hawaiian Airlines.



Until July 3, Hawaiian Airlines had offered the only nonstop between PDX and Maui. Alaska Airlines began with three flights weekly, and initiates daily service Aug. 7.

It said that having another airline come into the market will make prices more competitive. If Alaska comes in with lower rates, it will force Hawaiian Airlines to lower their rates as well.

The Portland flight is part of a big move by Alaska into the Hawaii market. Alaska Airline will have 59 flights a week between the mainland and four Hawaiian islands this fall.

The airline's expansion into Hawaii comes at a time when visits to the islands are dropping. Through the first five months of 2009, Hawaii visits were down 10.5 percent from the same period in 2008, according to state tourism data. The number of visitors to Maui dipped 18.5 percent from a year ago.

But because airlines overall have cut their flight offerings to Hawaii, planes are actually slightly more full than they used to be. That estimated load factor, stood at 85.4 percent through May this year, compared with 84.2 percent for the same period in 2008.

In addition to the two Maui flights, nonstop service between Honolulu and PDX is available on Hawaiian and Northwest, a Delta subsidiary. Despite the Hawaii tourism numbers falling, some travel agents in Portland report that leisure travel to Hawaii is up.

Some of the passengers recently want to travel in the summer but not to the Caribbean, because it's hurricane season, and don't have enough time off to go to the South Pacific, so they choose Hawaii.

Travel professionals hope the Alaska Airlines flights, which currently start at $214 each way (plus fees), will motivate more Portland-area travelers to head to Maui. Nonstop flights from PDX to Maui last nearly six hours.

That direct flight is just essential for visitors who want less hassle.

This normally reduces the width of an exit row seat, however as Air Asia seats are already very narrow, they have simply made the middle seat very small and kept the aisle and window seat the same size. The middle seat is not sold and always remains empty, meaning that aside from having unlimited legroom, exit row seats also have an empty seat next to them. These seats are bookable in advance from any time including booking through to check in. They are labelled as hot seats on the seat map and costs 100 Ringgit, £20GBP or $40AUD per trip.

The bulkhead seats are designed exactly the same as the Exit Row seats. As the middle seat is far too narrow for anyone to fit in, it is not sold and is always empty. The bulkhead seats do not have quite as much legroom as exit row seats, however it is still a vast improvement over regular seats. Also note that these seats are next to the bassinet and therefore more likely to have babies in them. It is definitely worth while to book a bulkhead of exit row seat if available and will make your journey very comfortable. These are all bookable on the Air Asia website and also at check in, assuming they haven't all been snapped up by this point. Make sure you do book them though because even if they are empty, the crew will stop you from moving to sit in these seats.
